11 Plus Maths Tutoring

The Maths syllabus includes topics that children will not tackle until they are in year six. Therefore preparation does not need to be ahead of where a child might be at school. InTuition ensures you have covered enough ground by the time that the grammar school exam takes place in September of year 6.

The maths papers are designed to challenge and stretch pupils. Your child will learn the KS2 syllabus where there is also a focus on learning problem solving type questions. We provide plenty of exam material nearing the exam. Ks2 Syllabus includes the following:

  • Numbers – rounding, decimals, percentages, word problems, multiples, LCM, HCH, unitary methods.
  • Algebra – Algebraic equations, simplifying expressions, simultaneous equations, Algebra inverse problems, BIDMAS, function machines, number patterns and sequences.
  • Measurement – Unit conversions, capacity, Area and perimeter.
  • Geometry – Shapes, angles, volume, coordinates, rotational symmetry circumference.
  • Statistics – Line graphs, bar charts, mean, median, mode, range, Venn diagrams, time and distance tables, pie charts.
  • Ratio and proportion.
  • Logical problems.
  • Probability.

11 Plus English Tutoring

We offer curriculum mapped tutoring lessons to prepare your child for 11 Plus English exam papers in one-to-one tuition classes

Your child will be prepared for English. For both Grammar and Independent schools, the exam can come in a variety of different topics. A typical paper would last 50 minutes with the following:

Comprehension test

This is usually a text based exam with around 500/800 words required to be read first. These texts can vary from classic novels to factual texts. Pupils are required to complete the questions which are based on the text.

11 Plus English Exam – Vocabulary testing

Children may be asked what various words in the text mean. They may be given a synonyms/opposites task. They may have CLOZE exercise to do (words with missing letters).

11 Plus English Exam – Spelling/Punctuation/Grammar

Children will often find a section of different questions on these topics which can take a number of different forms, an example would be correcting mistakes in a given passage.

11 Plus English Exam – Literary Devices

Some tests may examine a child’s knowledge of literary devices and ask them to identify devices such as Similes or Personification or Onomatopoeia.

11 Plus English Exam – Literacy reasoning

Some 11 Plus tests do not have specific Verbal Reasoning sections and so instead include some literacy reasoning questions in their English papers. These can cover rhyming words, anagrams, crosswords, odd words out, putting jumbled words into sentences, putting jumbled sentences or paragraphs into the correct order.

11 Plus English Exam – Creative writing

Often for Grammar School 11 Plus tests questions will be in multiple choice format because it makes it quick and easy for schools to mark. Some schools/areas do include Creative Writing to a degree but often this is only actually marked where two children are close in marks and going for the final place. Please check your 11 Plus area to see if Creative Writing is included.

In Independent School 11 Plus tests Creative Writing is nearly always included.

Verbal reasoning

This test is largely based on vocabulary and spelling skills. Both the CEM and GL assessment will test your child on their range of vocabulary Regardless of how much work is done on test papers, unless your child actively develops their vocabulary it’s difficult to progress beyond a certain level.

One way in which you can prepare early for verbal reasoning is to encourage your child to intensively and work on spellings early on. Reading regularly in year three and four benefit enormously.

Those children who perform best in the verbal reasoning tests are the ones who acquire the necessary vocabulary, breadth and spelling accuracy.

Non-verbal reasoning

We prepare your child for the non-verbal reasoning through example test papers and practice. Non-verbal reasoning is not something which is taught in schools.

These test deliberately use very little English so no real comprehension ability is needed to understand what to do. The test will teach your child logic and observational skills through a collection of shapes, patterns and pupils have to find the odd one out.

The best way these tests are prepared for is through practice.
